Description: The Need: Only 7 out of 10 youth in our area graduate from high school, and only 1 in 4 is college-ready. Students are behind in their basic skills for various life reasons: home life, bullies, poverty, attending under-performing schools etc. High school tutors focus on more challenging subjects such as upper level math, science and English. Students can become frustrated with these difficult subjects, especially when they don’t have someone who understands the material to tutor them. By volunteering to tutor, you will be able to help students do better in schools, improve their self-esteem, and serve as a positive role model. “Once [I was told] that since I started working with a student her grade rose from a D to a B+. That really made me feel like I was accomplishing something.” – A Bresee HS HW HelperThe Role: Tutors serve during our daily high school study hall. Each week they will be directed towards students who need help with their subject area of expertise. They will work with students in small groups or one-on-one. Tutors will sometimes have to take initiative to approach students and help them with their work. Tutoring is a great way to have fun, help kids to improve in their academics, and develop new skills. The Pre-requisites: Must love working with kids and be comfortable tutoring in at least one high school level subject. We are especially in need of volunteers who are comfortable tutoring in high school level math, science, and English. Must be comfortable tutoring in a less structured environment and taking initiative to work with students. Must be proficient in Microsoft Office, especially Word and Power Point. This is in addition to the general pre-requisites listed above.
