Position: Director of Development
AIDS Project Los Angeles (APLA), established in 1982 and currently celebrating 25 years of service, is among the nation's largest most successful, and most influential community service organizations serving people with HIV/AIDS. Its 2007 operating budget was approximately $18 million and it currently employs 123 full-time staff supported by upwards of 2,000 volunteers serving more than 8,600 clients annually. Two-thirds of these clients are people of color.
APLA is seeking an exceptional Director of Development; one who has a deep and abiding understanding of the complex public health, social justice, and international aspects of this disease and oen who welcomes the challenge of positioning APLA to remain viable long into the future.
The Director of Development reports to the Executive Director and will work closely with the Fund Development Committee of the Board. The Director has oversight for a division budget of approximately $5 million (including established contracts for direct mail and special events) and a staff of nine.
Areas of focus for future growth include renewed efforts in planned giving, an invigorated individual major gift program, the development and funding of international initiatives, and a push into web-based E-giving. The agency continues to be a leader among the country's major HIV service organizations, enjoys stable leadership, ac active and engaged Board of Directors, stable and reliable revenue streams, and significant growth initiatives.
Key Requirements:
- 10 or more years of fundraising experience
- Experience managing an effective development program wtih annual giving, special events, and planned giving accountability
- Or experience as a sales and marketing executive from the profit sector who has volunteer not-for-profit experience
- Ability to support Board development efforts and to work with corporations, foundations, and major donors
- Experience with direct response solicitation and employee gift campaigns
- Creative and innovative approach to special events
- Established foundation and corporate relationships
- Entrepreneurial spirit and can-do attitude
